The Quiet Interface
On the difference between a product that's busy and a product that's working - and why the best interfaces feel like they were always there.
The most expensive thing a product can ask for is attention. And yet we spend most of our craft handing out reasons to look at the interface.
A quiet interface is not a minimal one. Minimalism is an aesthetic. Quiet is a posture - the product knows what it's doing, and it doesn't need to perform that knowledge for the user.
The work, then, is mostly deletion. Decide what not to design. Decide what not to animate. Decide what not to surface. Then sit with the result long enough to know whether it survived.
