Context
Brother Bryce streams Warhammer 40,000 content in character as a Black Templar who fell in battle, was entombed in a Dreadnought and returned to fight again in the Jerulas Crusade. He wanted a channel that felt like nothing else on Twitch. His brief was simple: "Like watching from the bridge of an Imperial ship." Over two months in 2026 I designed the complete overlay system, from research and art direction through to the HUD, the motion-ready assets and a 3D Dreadnought I modelled and rendered from scratch in Blender for the live broadcast.
The problem
Most stream overlays are a webcam frame, a chat box and a few alerts. That would never satisfy this audience. Warhammer 40,000 fans know the lore in detail and notice anything that feels generic or off-brand. The brief set a high bar: no webcam, no out-of-character copy like "stream starting" or "be right back", a 3D character living inside the HUD, and a level of polish believable enough to pass as something the publisher made. On top of that, the live version had to be highly interactive, so viewers would take part in the stream instead of just watching it.
Approach
- 01
Turned the client debrief into seven clear design rules, from Black Templar livery to in-universe language only
- 02
Built a reference map across four research tracks: Dreadnought form language, ship bridge HUDs, dataslate terminal typography, and the emblem and ornament system
- 03
Pulled out what made each track feel authentic (riveted edges, sarcophagus shapes, CRT vox-green readouts, +++ TRANSMISSION +++ headers) and merged them into one direction: Bridge of the Eternal Crusade
- 04
Designed four broadcast scenes that follow the shape of a stream: Stand By, Live, Intermission and Transmission Ended, plus a layout for gameplay and Just Chatting
- 05
Rewrote every piece of stream language in-universe: chat becomes the vox-channel, the sub goal becomes brothers pledged, and every follow, sub, tip and raid arrives as its own dispatch
- 06
Made the audience part of the ship with vox-votes on bridge orders, three chat-driven minigames, and each viewer's own name in the scene title
- 07
Added a servo-skull that reads out viewer messages as text transmissions, with a live audio waveform
- 08
Modelled, textured and rendered a Black Templar Dreadnought from scratch in Blender, then built it into the Figma design as the centrepiece, with idle motion and reactions to big stream events
- 09
Built a full asset library and style guide: colour tokens, type scale, icons, ornaments, particles, dimensions and naming rules
- 10
Structured every frame with numbered, developer-friendly layer names (00_TOP_STATUS_BAR, 10_LEFT_COL, 90_BOTTOM_TICKER) so the build into live broadcast software stays fast and predictable
Outcome
- →A complete overlay system: 4 broadcast scenes plus a gameplay and Just Chatting layout, all at 1920x1080
- →A custom 3D Dreadnought, modelled and rendered in Blender and built for use in the live stream
- →13 alert variants for follows, subs, tips, raids and gifted subs, all written in-universe
- →Live interaction built in: viewer votes, 3 chat-driven minigames, a sub-goal tracker and text-to-speech transmissions
- →A production-ready asset library and style guide for the build and for future scenes
- →An overlay designed as a first of its kind: a stream where the audience crews the ship instead of just watching it
Reflection
“Every decision came back to one question: would this exist on a real Imperial warship? That rule killed a lot of familiar stream patterns, and the replacements were more fun. A follower alert became a new brother joining the crusade. A sub goal became a crusade quota. Building the Dreadnought myself meant the 3D model, the HUD and the motion could be designed as one piece, instead of a stock model dropped into a frame. It is the clearest example in my work of UI, 3D and interaction design coming together in one live product.”
